Dublin bicycle users warned: “Spend on a bike lock” or “pay the price”

The Bike Theft Working Group advises the following:

  • Lock your bike at home – more bikes are being stolen from gardens and sheds
  • Record your serial number and take a selfie/photo of you with bike
  • Don’t buy a bike you think might have been stolen – ask for a receipt
  • Always report a stolen bike and give the serial number and photo to gardai

REVOLUTIONARY SAFETY PRODUCT

hovding airbag for cyclists

HOW IT WORKS

Hövding is the world's first airbag for cyclists and is the result of intensive research since 2005. Through advanced sensors, Hövding can sense the cyclist's movement patterns and will react in case of an accident. The unique airbag will then inflate, fixate your neck and provide the world's best shock absorption.

Film made by Hövding, april 2014. Short film about why cycle helmets are far from as safe as we think they are, highlighting the gap between traditional cycle helmets and a new, radically different alternative: An airbag for cyclists.

THE AIRBAG SYSTEM

The airbag is designed like a hood and made in an ultra-strong nylon fabric that won't rip when scraped against the ground. Hövding protects nearly all of the head, while leaving the field of vision open.

The inflated airbag covers a much larger area than a traditional cycle helmet and is designed according to current accident statistics. The protection is greatest where it is needed most and the airbag provides extremely soft and gentle shock absorption. The pressure remains constant for several seconds, making it able to withstand multiple head impacts during the same accident. After that the airbag slowly starts to deflate.

The gas inflator that inflates the airbag is placed in a holder in the collar on the cyclist's back. Hövding's gas inflator is a so called cold gas inflator that uses helium.

hovding2 _0289_V2_high.jpg

SENSORS AND ALGORITHM

How Hövding tells the difference between biking and accidents:

Thousands of cycling accidents were re-enacted using stunt riders and crash-test dummies to collect the specific movement patterns of cyclists in accidents. In parallel, an equal amount of normal cycling data has been collected using test cyclists wearing Hövding in everyday cycling. Based on this collected data, we have developed an algorithm that can distinguish normal cycling from accidents.

Normal cycling means all the situations and movements that usually happen in a cycling context, bending down to pick up keys, etc.

In the highly unusual category of cycling accident where no measurable movement appears within the cyclist, i.e. if an object falls from above straight down on the cyclist's head, Hövding will not react.

3132r.jpg
3134r.jpg

ON/OFF

To put on your Hövding, place it around your neck and pull the zip up under your chin. The zip needs to be completely closed for the collar to work correctly. There is an on/off switch on the zip tag that activates Hövding when it's attached to the right-hand side of the collar. Similarly, Hövding is turned off when you unclip the on/off button.

At the front of the collar there are LEDs showing the battery level and whether Hövding is on or off. On/off is also indicated by a sound signal.

ON OFF HOVDING

CHARGING HÖVDING

Hövding's battery is easily charged through a computer using the USB cable included, when LEDs and a sound indicate that the battery is low (after about 9 hours of cycling).

You can also charge your Hövding using an ordinary mobile phone charger with a micro USB connector.

COLLAR & SHELL

The collar is made of waterproof functional fabric that provides the best possible protection for the built-in airbag system. The collar isn't washable but is protected from wear, sweat and dirt by the surrounding fabric shell. Any marks on the collar can be rubbed off carefully with a damp cloth.

The collar is ergonomically designed with even weight distribution across the shoulders. It is slightly heavier at the back than at the front so that when cycling the weight is resting on your back.

The main purpose of the enclosing shell is to make it possible for you to change the appearance of your Hövding. The shell is easy to remove and wash, or change for a different one to match your outfit.

COLLAR AND SHELL

AFTER AN ACCIDENT

If your Hövding has been deployed we would like you to contact us.

Inside the collar there is a black box that records 10 seconds of data on the cyclist's movement patterns from an accident. In some cases the data from an accident is interesting and valuable to us in our on-going development work.

Some insurance companies cover part of the expense of a new Hövding after you have had an accident. Contact your insurance company to hear how they handle your case.

CE

Hövding is CE marked after undergoing an extensive process for approval by SP Technical Research Institute of Sweden. CE marking is required for a cycle helmet to be able to be sold in Europe and certifies that the helmet complies with the requirements laid down in the EU Directive for personal protection equipment.

All types of helmets have to provide protection for the head in the form of shock absorption and force distribution in an accident. Complete protection in the event of an accident and functioning during normal use are basic criteria for CE marking. The helmet must also be designed so as to cause no unnecessary risks, i.e. there must be no sharp edges, etc. which could injure the wearer. The environmental tolerance criteria for helmets dictate that they must be able to withstand moisture and work in heat and cold and when subjected to the sun's ultraviolet light.

HipLok Chic & Gold Security For Your Bike

Hiplok - Designed for Riding. Built for Security

hiplok.gif

At Hiplok, protecting the enjoyment of your ride is what matters most. Their locks are designed for maximum portability while offering the best security possible for purpose.

British industrial designers and cycling enthusiasts, Ben Smith and John Abrahams, founded Hiplok in 2011, and set out to change the way people think about and use bicycle security for the better

Before Hiplok, a lock had to be attached to your bike or put in a bag.  The frustration of how to prevent damage to your bike, use of an unsightly bracket or creating an unstable load led to the inspiration for their first award winning product – a wearable bike lock that attaches to the rider not the bike

Fast forward to the present day and Hiplok have stayed true to the original mission, designing and building a complete line-up of security products to protect every cyclist.

LEAP Card vs Bicycle

The Commute

Average commute by Luas, Bus or Rail + walk can take anything between 30 min to 1,5 hour. Plus added danger of strikes, accidents, road closures, heavy traffic.

Leap Card

The vast bulk of people in Dublin City, Co Dublin and even the Greater Dublin Area live in easy to cycle distances and most people live in and around the M50.

Cycling To Work

The average cycling speed in Dublin is around 14km/h. Some people go slower and some go much faster, but using this speed as a guide, a trip of 5 km would only take around 20 mins, 7 km would only take 30 mins, and a trip of 10 km would only take a little over 40 mins + unlocking and locking of your bike time of 10 min for both sides of journey.

Average commute by bicycle can take anything between 15 min to 1 hour. With added health benefit. No traffic. No strikes. Very little chance of accidents or road closures affecting your commute.

The Weather

Rain Or Shine, both types of commute can be dreadful in rain, but with proper clothes you leave your house depending on weather anyway. Simple rain proof jacket or coat can make the difference between sitting in traffic in bus or cycling off to/from work on time.

Added benefit is that cycling heats your body much more than sitting in public transport, that means you wont need all the winter clothes on while cycling.

The Equipment

Bus, Luas, Rail? Yuck.

Bicycle maintenance issues can be solved by using integrated gears for hilly commute or single gear for shorter faster commutes and no puncture Tannus Solid Tyres. With a bicycle equipped this way you can enjoy the ride and not worry about it, no stress, just freedom, efficiency.

Other good bits are proper LED Lights keeping you illuminated and visible. Rain guards keeping the road dirt and water away from your legs. And bell making your presence known.

The Cost

We will compare capped prices, usually, commuter will use public transport at least 5 days out of a week.

Leap Card Caps your travel credit spend, so once you hit an applicable cap you can travel for free on those services for the rest of day or week. Most people will reach this in 3-4 days out of 7.

leap card caps

So your average weekly commute is costing you:

Adult between €23.5 - €40

Student between €18 - €30

Annual cost comparison Public Transport VS Bicycle

New Urban/City Commuting Bicycle can cost you anything between €300 to €1000 depending on your budget.

For example a dlb Single Speed/Fixie is about €350 plus Helmet, Lights, Lock and Rain-Guards maybe a Rain Jacket and Tannus Tyres which can come at anything between €50 to €250 depending on your needs. Total of €600 which you can pay over by Cycle To Work scheme with your employer or by instalments If you are a student with dlb cycles.

Annual cost comparison Public Transport VS Bicycle:

Adult between €1128 <> €1920 vs €600

Student between €864 <> €1440 vs €600

And bicycle with proper maintenance and good lock will last for years in your possession. So the savings will just pile up! Go Ride!

Cycle to work scheme: your questions answered

ONE WAY TO  help get yourself fitter is to get pumping those legs on a bike to and from work. The Cycle to Work scheme was implemented by the government a couple of years ago, and has benefits for both employers and employees.

If you’re an employer looking to avail of the scheme but are still a bit baffled as to how it works in your favor, we’ve answered some of the basics for you.

Q: How does the cycle to work scheme benefit me?

A: Well, firstly it might help you get fit. Secondly, it will aid the environment if you’re ditching the car for your commute and cycling instead. Thirdly, it will save you a few quid if you are looking to buy a bike to aid you on your journey to and from work.

Q: How is my employer involved in all of this?

A: You choose the bike and the necessary safety equipment to go with it, and your employer picks up the tab. Obviously, you’ll need to tell your employer you wish to engage in the scheme first. It may be at your employers discretion where you purchase your bike, and the price range available.

Q: And how do I pay for it then?

A: You then enter into something called a ‘salary sacrifice’. This means you’ll pay back the cost of the bike over a time that’s no more than twelve months. Each repayment will be deducted from your gross pay (ie, before tax, PRSI, Universal Social Charge etc).

Q: Do I actually save money on the bike by getting it this way?

A: Good news, yes you do.

Q: OK, cool. How much can I save then?

A: Well, that all depends on how much you earn each year before tax, and how much the bike etc costs. The good folk at Bike To Work have provided a handy calculator to help you work it out here. But you can save anywhere between 31% and 52% on the cost of the bike.

Q: So, I can get as many bikes as I like through this, once I’m able to pay for them each week/month?

A: Nope, afraid not. As an employee, you can only avail of the scheme once every five years.

Q: OK, but is there a limit to how much I can spend on the bike?

A: Technically, no. But only the first €1,000 will be exempted from income tax

Q: Do I have to use the bike to travel to and from work?

A: The bike must be used for part or the full journey to and from work. There’s no obligation on your employer to check how you’re using the bike. But, they should ask you for a signed statement that only you will be using the bike and that it will be used to travel to and from work.

Q: Can I use the scheme to buy a second hand bicycle?

A: No, the scheme only applies to new bikes and new safety equipment

Q: And what safety equipment is covered by all of this?

A: Cycle helmets, bells and bulb horns, lights and dynamo packs, mirrors, mudguards, cycle clips and dress guards, luggage carriers, panniers and straps to help carry luggage, locks and chains, pumps, puncture repair kits, cycle tool kits and tyre sealant, reflective clothing, front reflectors and spoke reflectors, Tannus Tyres.

Q: No spokey dokeys?

A: No, sadly not.

Q: Is there a site to get the full details on the scheme?

A: Yeah, Bike To Work seems to be the place to go. But don't forget it's on your employer to be willing to support the scheme. There is no need to be registered with Bike To Work Ltd. Talk to us through our contact form or via info@dlbcycles.ie to get the best deal!

Tannus Tyres VS Continental Gatorskin

IMG_0025.jpg
continental gatorskin.png

So what happens when you put side by side the one of best selling puncture proof road tyres in Ireland/UK and Tannus Tyre?

First Question Everyone asks is weight. How heavy they are?

But first lets see what you need to take into consideration as 'weight':

Gatorskins 700 x23 come in two formats of bead: folding and wire, 220g resp. 290g each, let's go with the wire ones (pain in the ass to put on and off)

  • Then you need a Rim Tape, 22g each
  • Also a tube like Conti Race, 105g each
  • Pump Lezyne P Drive mini, 90g
  • Spare tubes of course, 105g each
  • Tools, can't forget them! Weldite Cure-C-Cure kit for example, 41g
  • And at least a saddle bag like a Topeak Aero Wedge, 100g

Lets round that up, 2 Tyres, 4 Tubes, 2 Rim Tapes, Pump, Tools, Bag = 1275g

VS

Tannus Tyres 700 x23 come only in one variant, and many many colors. Weighs at 380g each.

  • no Rim Tape, nope don't need it
  • Tubes? Nope. We go solid.
  • Pump? Nah. No air guys.
  • Spares? What?
  • Tools? Ehm. Sell them.
  • Bag? Well put the snacks there, 100g

Lets round that up, 2 Tyres and a bag = 860g

Weight? Nearly half a kilo savings. Yes lightweight. Very light.

Tannus ONE vs Conti ZERO

What about Rolling Resistance, Bounce and Pressure?

Imagine riding your Contis at 100psi at all times! The performance on top of the scales all the time! Perfect balance of rolling resistance and bounce. How long does it last? Till you get a puncture? No. The moment you take the pump off the valve you loose up to 5psi. Next day you lost another 5psi through the walls of your tubes after riding for few hours. This continues constantly and next Saturday Morning on your training day If you don't blow em up again you are riding on some 75-85psi at best. You might feel its fine, it's comfortable, it's fast. No. You are just letting your Contis do just half the job they were made for.

VS

Tannus Tyres stay solid 100psi equivalent all of their guaranteed lifetime! 100% of the time you are riding at peak performance.  No compromise. They roll exactly like your Contis, Bounce the same at same air pressure as 100psi.

Its a draw. Same performance and road feel.

Tannus TWO vs Conti ONE

Grip, what about grip in wet? Am I safe?

Gatorskin Tyres are great on contact with wet road, in rain and in dry. But what If you get a blow out at high speed? Where will that take you?

VS

In comparison Tannus Tyres are the only Tyres in WORLD safety certified by TÜV Rheinland (Germany). That not only means they are completely safe regarding to punctures but also to grip capabilities in wet and dry as any other proper Tyres.

Amazing Grip and Certified Safety. Tannus Wins.

Tannus THREE vs Conti ONE

Are they expensive? What about the price?

Continental Gatorskin 700 x23 with wire bead and all of the needed components for surviving the puncture and daily life with pneumatic tyres. Will cost you:

  • Conti Gatorskin 700 x23, Wire Bead, 290g, €35.49 x2
  • Schwalbe Rim Tape, 22g, €2.99 x2
  • Conti Race Tubes, 105g, €5.49 x2
  • Pump Lezyne P Drive mini, 90g, €35.49
  • Spare tubes of course, 105g, €5.49 x2
  • Tools, Weldite Cure-C-Cure kit, 41g, €7.49
  • Topeak Aero Wedge, 100g, €15.49

Total of €157.39 at best on-line prices like of Chainreactioncycles.com or best concrete retail prices around €224.91. Large sums indeed.

Not accounting for mounting at a shop and ALL the hassle changing flats will bring over their lifetime, which for average rider is about a year worth of riding.

VS

Tannus Tyres 700 x23 in any of the many colors cost €139.00 for a set. Always. Everywhere. Not accounting for mounting at a shop. They also are guaranteed for 10000 km on thread wear and FLAT FREE forever!

Tannus FOUR vs Conti ONE

4 reasons why go for Tannus Tyres. If your shop doesn't stock them yet give us a shout, we sort them out, and get you a pair fitted ASAP.

Go SOLID. Tannus Tyres.

Cargo Bikes in Dublin

HOW CAN YOU USE dlb EV Cargo Bikes?

dlb EV Cargo Bikes (Technically a Trike with Pedelec system) are built to carry a bunch more than your typical bicycle or long john like Bullit that most couriers use. Stronger frames intended for heavy hauling (cca 150kg) mean you can load them to the hilt knowing they are up to the task. Keeping the load low and enclosed in a box means that you maintain a reasonable center of gravity and the dynamics of the bike stay comfortable enough thanks to electric assistance from the Pedelec system. This makes the dlb EV Cargo Bike great to ride, despite the burden of heavy items. You can easily keep up with traffic and other bike riders, even fits into bike lanes and is great fun once winds start to blow and you can just whizz past lycra clad racers at 30km/h. Max speed is around 35km/h (can be exceeded by pushing your own pedaling to the limit).

dlb EV Cargo Bikes are up to a variety of tasks and can make your life easier and more enjoyable, whether you’re in need of a logistical solution or a more fun way to fetch groceries, IKEA furniture, or deliver morning papers.

IN YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD

dlb EV Cargo Bikes can go places a car or van can’t. dlb EV Cargo Bikes can park in places where others get towed or clamped. They always get the attention and they’re fun to ride. That park between you and the gig becomes the scenic route and the expressway all at the same time. Cruise through your hood like a champion and wave to your fans.

IN YOUR SMALL BUSINESS

Small business is big fun with dlb EV Cargo Bikes. Save money, save time and save the future with every pedal stroke. A cargo bike is a rolling billboard and a logistical wunderkind wrapped in one. You can deliver the goods and good impressions all at once.

IN YOUR HOME

Kids, groceries, playground, beach, farmers market, restaurant, work, weekends, dogs, firewood, fireworks and whatever. One dlb EV Cargo Bike can do everything your car did and your Long Haul Trucker wished it could. Only more fun. Commit already.

FAQ

HOW MUCH CAN YOU CARRY?

The weight capacity of the dlb EV Cargo Bike is 150kg (We did exceed this in testing and it is possible to carry more kg at lower speeds, and after simple modifications we can increase this number). What you are comfortable hauling is the real question. Build confidence. Start small.

Examples: We carried full office suite from IKEA. A College Student whole room and gaming setup. 4 bikes? Yes 4 fully built bicycles on one cargo bike. 2 dogs (large ones). Another cargo bike (disassembled). Fridge. Armchair. People :D Even camera rig in action.

ARE dlb EV Cargo Bikes HARD TO RIDE?

Only if you don’t try. Seriously, cargo bikes have a learning curve for an already confident rider. A larger turning radius require that you remap your steering inputs. First timers: make sure you have right seat height and you can reach bar even fully tilted. When turning take your body weight fully to the side you are turning to and use your brakes to stabilize the bike to reasonable speed (less than 15km/h). Industry secret: you can tilt the Trike into corners with higher speed, but this is something only pros are allowed to do!!

ARE THEY HARD TO PEDAL?

Only if they are heavily loaded and you’re riding up a bigger hill. If you plan to use a cargo bike where the terrain ain’t flat, consider turning on Pedelec electric assist. If you aren’t hauling big stuff up big hills, the dlb EV Cargo Bike is surprisingly easy to pedal. If you want to be everywhere well ahead others have the Pedelec system fully boosted at all times, you can easily achieve speeds of 35km/h and average about 20-25km/h in moderate traffic. Last time we checked Car/Van averages 17km/h in Dublin traffic. Lame.

HOW MUCH DOES A dlb EV Cargo Bike WEIGH?

At just over 60 kg (standard setup), the dlb EV Cargo Bike is a heavyweight in the cargo bike world. Heavy hauling requires heavy duty build! This presents one more plus point, you can park it anywhere lock it to itself, not a pole, and no thief will be able to push it away. For more technical specs look back at first page.

STORAGE AND PARKING

On your daily runarounds short term parking can be easily done anywhere. Park it on side of the road (not on double yellow), pavement, next to phone box, bike rack, at the shopfront. Lock it to itself, engage parking brakes and leave. Cargo bike is too big and clumsy for manual removal by thief, especially with locked wheels.

For longer parking periods and overnight storage we suggest a safe parking garage or yard at your house. On street parking for overnight storage can be done, find a pole lock the bike frame to it, lock the wheels with second lock and maybe use a cable. Trike comes with a large raincover that envelops the whole body just like a car pyjama.
